You don’t have to travel far from Fairfax homes to find traditional Irish music and learn how to play from experienced musicians. The NoVA Irish Session invites DC metro home owners to come to a weekend gathering to learn Irish tunes and play them. Head to the Auld Shebeen Pub near Fairfax homes on Saturdays for a session from noon to 2 p.m. On the first Saturday of the month, a tune teaching session is held at Green Acres School from 10 a.m. to noon.
Meet Irish Musicians Close to Your DC Metro Home
The NoVa Irish Session welcomes players of all levels of skill and experience. The experienced musicians of the session are happy to see new faces at the group and to share knowledge and techniques. Tune teaching sessions focus the first hour on one particular tune. The leader plays it phrase by phrase, and everyone joins in. Sheet music is provided, but participants are encouraged to memorize the music and learn to play by ear. Kids and adults who have basic proficiency in their instrument are welcome to attend.
Be sure to visit the NoVa Irish Session website. There are links to music commonly played at sessions and for ceilis, as well as more information about places to play in the area.
